A few minutes of care keeps your footwear looking good and comfortable for much longer. Here is how to look after every Underroute pair, from everyday sandals to formal shoes and Chelsea boots.
The basic rule
Wipe your footwear gently with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid washing, soaking, harsh chemicals, and direct heat or sunlight. That covers most of the care any pair needs.
Everyday sandals
- Brush off dust and dirt from the straps and footbed with a dry, soft brush or cloth.
- Wipe the straps and footbed with a cloth dampened with plain water. Wring the cloth out well first so it is only slightly damp.
- Clean the sole with a damp cloth to remove mud and grit, so it keeps its grip.
- Air-dry in a shaded, well-ventilated place before wearing them again.
Formal shoes
- Wipe the upper with a soft dry cloth after each wear to remove dust.
- For marks, use a slightly damp cloth, then buff dry with a clean soft cloth.
- Loosen the laces before taking them off, so the heel keeps its shape.
- Stuff them lightly with paper between wears to help them hold their shape and absorb moisture.
Chelsea boots
- Wipe the upper with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then buff with a dry cloth for shine.
- Keep the elastic side panels dry, and avoid over-stretching them when pulling the boots on.
- Store them upright so the ankle does not crease.
If your footwear gets wet (monsoon tips)
- Wipe off water and mud as soon as you can.
- Stuff closed shoes and boots with dry paper to soak up moisture; change the paper after a few hours.
- Let them dry naturally in the shade at room temperature.
- Do not dry footwear in direct sun, on a heater, or with a hair dryer. Heat can warp the sole and weaken the materials.
Keeping footbeds fresh
- Let footwear air out for a few hours after wearing, instead of putting it straight into a closed cupboard.
- Rotate between two pairs if you wear sandals every day, so each pair has time to dry out fully.
- Wipe the footbed with a slightly damp cloth regularly to remove sweat and dust.
Storing your footwear
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Keep pairs apart rather than piled on top of each other, so straps and uppers are not crushed.
- Use the original box or a breathable bag for pairs you are not wearing for a while.
What to avoid
- Machine washing or soaking in water
- Bleach, detergents, solvents or other harsh chemicals
- Drying in direct sun or with direct heat
- Leaving footwear wet or damp in a closed space
